A friend and I took off for a quick trip last weekend and headed up towards Micanopy and High Springs, Florida. I was on the hunt for junk I can upcycle into my art projects. Upcycle doesn't exactly mean the same thing as recycle, it has more of a repurpose idea to it.
As you dig through all the stacks of discarded items, you always come across boxes of abandoned old family photos. It makes me sad to think of the living relatives who would love to have these pictures.
Back home I had a box of photos of people who have no genetic relationship to my family. I was cleaning out cabinets and realized nobody in my family would be interested in these folks. What should I do, just send them off to an antique store somewhere?
Instead, I was able to follow down some old dusty paths in my memory and dig out the names of some of the children and the last little threads of information I had about their whereabouts. Several internet searches later and a few phone calls after that, I was able to reuinte these photos to families who had not one single picture of these great great gandparents. I'm busy today scanning and marking them to put in an email. It took a few hours out of my life, but it felt great to do it. Do you have a few photos like this hanging around your house?
